The Perfect Tomato...

Our farm started as exclusively offering heirloom vegetables. Though they are not as showy as the brightly colored flowers, our vegetables are a source of pride for us. We’ve spent the past 7 years trying to identify and grow tomatoes that truly taste like summer. The vast majority of store-bought tomatoes are picked too soon, primary bred for their commercial growing traits, and generally taste more like cardboard than what a tomato should taste like. If a slicer variety can’t be eaten straight from the garden on a plate by itself with just a little salt and pepper, we aren’t interested in growing it.

We’ve narrowed our trials to a select group of proven winners that we anxiously await to offer:

  • Slicers – We’ve chosen a couple older red varieties, Abe Lincoln and Mortgage Lifters, because of their size and meaty flesh. The brightest flavors come from our Pineapple and Gold Medal orange varieties. They are super juicy and great for sauces too. The top weight for 2025 came in at 3 pounds 2 ounces for an Abe Lincoln. We pick them when they are ripe and ready to eat.

  • Grape and Smaller – We’ve selected just two varieties that work well and are prolific producers. The Pink Bumble Bee has a sweet taste and delicate skin that makes them perfect for snacking or salads. The Spoon tomato is about the size of a pea yet has a full tomato flavor. They are fantastic for pasta, lettuce, and spring green salads because they don’t water the salad down and give a nice pop of flavor when you bite into them.

In 2026 we will be test growing some paste varieties for sauces, but we won’t mention them by name or offer them for sale until they pass the tests in the kitchen.
